Karystos Slates for the Garden, the courtyard, the Pavement or the Ramp.

The stages of the procedure:

When we decide to slate a hallway, garden, courtyard, ramp or sidewalk, Karystos Natural Stone is an excellent choice! It is a relatively easy, fast and above all economical solution. Whereas in case in the future we want to perform any work on the subsoil e.g. passage of cables, pipes, we break these plates and when the work is finished we reposition new ones without showing at all the work done. The steps you should take to select and place the pavement slabs are as follows:

Design & Selection of Slates

After drawing the work on paper with special care and on the technical part for safety and proper operation, mark on the ground the piece you want to cover. The next step is to form the subsoil and select the plates. In KARYSTOLITHOS there is a wide variety of sizes, shapes and colors, there is also a wide variety in terms of the texture of the final surface. Options are available in relation to texture, in addition to the simple, there are also: the beat which gives a wild and embossed non-slip surface, and the sandblast which is like the hit but has a softer embossed non-slip surface. When you place the order you will need to calculate some extra quantity + 5% because cuts will need to be made to fit properly at the edges.

 Substrate Construction & Placement

The installation of pavement slabs requires a hard and flat surface. If the ground is not stable you must drop concrete (concrete) at least 6 cm for substrate. If the ground is stable place only 3A (sand) as base material on the surface to be laid. Place a base material of at least 6 cm each time, then wet and compress the substrate, making sure that it provides the appropriate gradients for rainwater runoff. Around the surface you will construct it is necessary a stable frame that ensures their containment and good preservation of the shape of the project over time. Start placing the pavement slabs along the longest straight side and at a 90 degree angle with the house or other structure, it makes it easier. Continue extending along the longest straight side. For the installation we use cement mortar (mud) which enters between the plates and the ground to weld but also to give the appropriate gradients. The cement mortar consists of sand-cement-lime and water. You must be careful that the cement mortar is sufficient and that there is no gap between the ground and the plate to create as compact a surface as possible. On surfaces where cars press for better stabilization, the plates should be placed with appropriate. The gap of the joint is usually 1 cm. At the edges of the construction you return to make the necessary cuts in the right sizes to fit the edges and thus seal the whole construction. When you see that you are having difficulty, we will be happy to provide you with any help you need regarding the application of natural karysto rocks.

Waterproofing & Stocking

Optionally and for extra durability, stain protection and less maintenance, waterproof the plates. Do very good cleaning before and choose a suitable commercial waterproofing product, apply it following the manufacturer’s instructions for use, For the joint mix marble dust with cement and dilute it with water so that it penetrates and fills the gaps of the joints. After you have made the stocking material, put it in a jug and start stocking by filling the joints. Allow the material to dry a little and then wipe it with a hard brush and a sponge with water, but be careful because if you allow the material to dry enough then it will be difficult to clean. For high aesthetic result and quality of construction it is preferable to contact a specialized workshop. who has experience with the application of natural Karystos slates.
